About the Winchester Mystery House®
Winchester Mystery House® is the beautiful but bizarre mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. Construction began in 1886, and didn’t stop for 36 years until Sarah’s passing in 1922. Mrs. Winchester lives on in legend as a grieving widow who continuously built onto her small farmhouse to appease the spirits of those who were felled by her family's firearms company. The dizzying Victorian-style structure features many odd and mysterious features. There are doors that open to walls, stairways that lead to the ceiling, and many more oddities in the massive mansion. Featuring 160 rooms, 52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens, the structure is a staggering 24,000 square feet.
